Linen vs cotton sheets: which should you choose?

Cotton is the most common, linen the most sought after. Both make beautiful beds, but they don’t sleep the same way. Here are the differences that really matter.

How they feel

Cotton is smooth and soft from the start, especially as percale (matte and crisp) or sateen (lustrous and silky). Linen has a more textured hand, slightly nubby when new, then softer and softer: washed linen is soft from the first night and keeps softening with every wash.

Breathability and temperature

This is where linen wins. Its hollow fibre absorbs a lot of moisture and releases it quickly, so you sweat less and the bed stays dry. Linen is ideal for hot sleepers and summer nights. Cotton breathes well too, especially percale, but holds on to more moisture.

Durability

Linen fibre is long and very strong: well-cared-for linen bedding often outlasts cotton by years and doesn’t pill. Cotton is durable, but it thins and can pill over time depending on its quality.

Look and care

  • Linen crinkles naturally: that relaxed look is the point, and it needs no ironing.
  • Cotton looks crisper, but percale creases too and needs ironing for a perfect finish.
  • Both wash at 40 °C (about 100 °F) for everyday use.

What about bamboo?

“Bamboo” sheets are usually bamboo viscose: very soft and fluid, but more delicate, sensitive to dryer heat and less durable than linen. They are made through a chemical process, while linen is a natural fibre that needs little water to grow.

Price

Linen costs more upfront than cotton because the fibre is rarer and takes longer to process. Over time, its longevity makes up much of the difference.

In short

  • You sleep hot and love a relaxed, lived-in bed: choose linen.
  • You prefer a smooth hand and a crisp look: choose cotton percale.
  • A middle ground: a linen duvet cover with a cotton fitted sheet, or the other way round by season.
